Early Signs of ASD

6 Month+

  • Lack of eye contact, babbling or social smiling
  • Over fussy or difficult to soothe

9 Month+

  • No response to social anticipation (E.g. peek-a-boo) or to their names being called
  • Poor visual tracking (follow movement of objects with eyes

12 Month+

  • Lines up / plays with toys in unusual manner
  • Repetitive behaviors such as spinning objects, hand flapping or body rocking

16 Month+

  • Low enthusiasm to explore new things or interact with other children when they approach
  • Difficulty using & understanding language
  • Sensitivities to sound, taste, sight, touch or smell

24 Month+

  • Exhibits behaviors to stimulate senses, such as humming loudly or switching light on and off repeatedly
  • Difficulty with changes to surroundings or routines
  • Challenging behaviors such as aggression, self injury or severe withdrawal

FREE SCREENING

Pediatricians are recommended to screen for development issues and signs of ASD at 15 to 24 months. However, there may still be a long wait to schedule an assessment and receive an actual diagnosis.

Receiving an early diagnosis of ASD can have an immense impact on your child’s development. It opens many opportunities for support and more importantly, the start of efficacious treatment.
